Overlooks the Spelga Dam and the Deer's Meadow, the source of the River Bann. It is surprising to think that this river rises less than 10 miles from the coast near Newcastle, and yet it empties into the sea near Coleraine.   Slieve Muck is the 160th highest summit in Ireland.

Picture: As you climb Muck, stunning views open up across Spelga Dam

Having already bagged an unprecedented (for us novices) three peaks that morning, we made our way down off Pigeon Rock along Batts Wall towards the impressive looking slopes of Slieve Muck. The push up the steep slope along the wall proved quite challenging but each step opened up a more and more impressive view of Spelga Dam and the surrounding hills which we had traversed earlier. The huge trig point proved a welcome sight. The panoramas from the summit are very impressive with the higher Mournes visible across the Mourne Wall, Slieve Foye and Slieve Gullion visible in the near distance and The Sperrins visible further afield. The wall offers shelter for some food and it was here we met Richard and Robert from the Wee Binnians walking club who were doing some reccie for an upcoming trip. The lads sketched out the course of the Mourne Wall which we plan to walk later in the year. Muck is certainly a good challenge and is well worth the effort.
