New Comment: and on to Slieve Donard.
by millsd1  Sun 16 Apr
As a mere bump on the ESE spur of Slieve Donard, Crossone is unlikely to be considered a “destination” summit. Except by summiteers of course!
It is however an obvious way-point on an interesting and challenging alternative summit of Slieve Donard on its steepest upper slopes.
Ascend Crossone from the Quarry Track as per short summary description.
From Crossone it’s 1 km as the crow flies to the summit of Donard on a grid bearing of 287 degrees. Due to the prevalence of boulder fields and scree above the 650m mark (as clearly seen in Sandman’s photo) you’re unlikely to follow this course. Probably an ascent best saved for a day with reasonable visibility, it is possible to work around most of the rocks on interconnecting patches of low heather and grass by erring south (left) of the above course line. Actual distance walked closer to 1.4km, we connected with the wall about 80m south of the summit after 45 minutes. Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/1451/comment/18882/
