Hazy, breezy but still impressive.
by tommyhogan  26 Mar 2012 Climbed Galtymore on Sat 24/03/12 as it was a crackingly good day, if a bit hazy. Began from the Clydagh river car park on the Aherlow side & headed straight up the tarred road for maybe 2km before going through some farm gates & on to the mountain slopes. Decided against Cush as time was a bit against us (it was 12 noon) & headed straight up to the saddle between Cush & Galtybeg. At the top there we looped around to the east following the small path overlooking Lough Muskery & then turned west directly into the hard slog up Galtybeg. The beeze below seemd to turn into a howling gale by now but luckily it was to our back & gave some assistance. Pretty dry conditions underfoot after the recent dry weather but still 1 or 2 big-jumps had to be made. Continued on from there to the slopes of Galtymore but again, the wind was slightly with us which helped but certainly wary of going too close to the edge. At the top we were a bit above the haze so got good views of the Comeragh/Knockmealdown mountains but unfortunately no views of Cork/Kerry mountains or even to Limerick. Followed the wall then to the angle where it continues west but from there we aimed for the distant cairn & downwards. Descent was relatively easy as the heather & ground was dry & back to the forest track below in maybe 1.5hrs from the summit of Galtymore, including stopping. All in all made it back to the car in just under 5hrs.
