A gem with teeth!

As fergalh has said, plenty parking available at the turnoff at the coordinates, but be careful not to block access to the house being constructed or the horse riding trails over Barrabunocka bridge. Continue on past the barrier and when the track winds upwards and finally to the right continue on straight ahead at the fork. R704202 D. As in its near neighbour Keale there is no view to be had from the summit. Once however you continue as directed fine vistas open up on your right. Keale, Coolfree, The Nagles, Carrigeenamronely [with jackills biscuit tin!] the promontory fort of Castle Gale and finally the Galtees can all be enjoyed from the track.
When you reach the turning circle, the path reduces to a single path for approx 50 metres, where you meet an older trail coming up from your right. R716195 E. Good view from here down to the village of Glenroe. [ No, no Miley or Biddy!] Turn left here and continue up to the summit approx 10/15 minutes. As I said earlier, no view to be seen , only the Nagles rising in the south in the direction you came from. To return, retrace your steps.
N.B You may be tempted, as I was to access the summit from the firebreak located on the track at R704201 F.(you can see it in the picture) While it rises steeply at first, It’s ok with care, with only minor briars to cope with. However....part 2 of the firebreak has a far more organised defence of very established briars backed up with battalions of Gorse bushes. I was sorry i hadn’t brought a machete with me!! After a painstaking traverse of same I finally emerged on the track already mentioned with the summit approx 100 metres to the left. Needless to say I didn’t return that way.
N.B 2: It would be possible to access Keale mountain from the parking here by crossing over Barrabunocka bridge.....if you like walking through trees. I’d seen enough of them for 1 day. Trackback: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/1082/comment/15875/
