by jackill  19 Aug 2006 During his visit to Kerry in 1809 the Welsh botanist Lewis Dillwyn wrote “The air was filled with the fragrance of wild flowers, and the eye wherever it turned beheld a region of delight, in which nature seemed to have unlocked all her treasures”
Sitting on the broad col between Mangerton and Stoompa on a hot July day I’m not sure the carpet of insect devouring Butterwort(Bog Violet) had quite the fragrance he had in mind but the Horses Glen certainly had the view.
The peaks of Mangerton North and Glenacappul tower overhead.
From the left are the corries Lough Erhogh and Lough Managh flowing down to Lough Garagarry. The rocks facing the viewer across the Glen are unusual in being volcanic in origin (you can see the rounded shape of the out-flow under Glenacappul ) surrounded by Green Sandstone and Purple Siltstone.

by jackill  10 Sep 2004 Mangerton North Top is in the centre of the photo with Mangerton Mountain covered in cloud on the right. The tributaries of the Owengarriff river snake up the hillside to the Devils Punchbowl through the boulder fields of Ferta from the Old Kenmare Road. You can just make out Glenacappul top as the bump slightly down the left side of Mangerton North Top with The Paps and Crohane behind in the distance. The vantage point is on top of Torc Mountain.

by Geo  9 Feb 2009 As earlier mentioned in comment on Mangerton, our intrepid band got to the outlet of the Devils Punchbowl after our ascent of Mangerton's great summit. Because we had been unable, or perhaps more accurately unwilling to commit to crossing the arete above in the icy, windy conditions we had the North satellite peak teasing and taunting us, unclimbed. Two of us decided to do a quick ascent directly up and easily did it in 25 minutes, and were glad of it, I now had the luxury of bagging two of the top 100 today, and going down to the bridle path in the snow was one of those euphoric and beautiful moments of life. A quick cuppa when we met the path at a large leaning stone, and then the less than nice finish down the icy track to the car park. All in all a terrific days walking. Many thanks to beckett and his walk guide, and to my 4 companions for a great day.

by eflanaga  18 Apr 2009 Took in Mangerton North Top (as first of 5 summits) in a circuit of Mangerton/Stoompa. Approached from track on northern edge of Devils Bowl that leads to the scarp between Mangerton's two tops. Picture taken from aforementioned track.

by simon3  2 Jan 2009 Leading south from Mangerton North Top is this fine scarp with a small pond near the middle. On one side (west, right in the pic) is the "Devil's Punch Bowl" and on the other is Lough Erghogh.

Our picture caught the scarp on a fine frosty December day.

Conor74, I'd suggest that you could climb Shehy Mor (and combine it with Djouce and Doughill mountains for a longer walk). The best access for climbing Shehy Mor is from the unclassified road whic...
