This was the last stop on a traverse of the ridge that finished with a fine pint of Guinness in the Gougane Barra Hotel.
I have found a mention of Gougane in the writings of Ann Plumptre who passed through the area in 1814, alas though she did not enjoy a stout here." no carriage, or even horse, could get nearer than within two miles, from whence the walk was over the sides of boggy mountains" , "my courage was not equal to the undertaking, and I abandoned the idea"
But what a wonderful pity she missed the view(and the stout!) (Comment Rating 3.67)

From a visual point of view, Coomataggart is not a very distinctive summit. It can be rather hard to pick out as it just happens to be the highest point of the broad ridge that runs North-East from Gougane Barra in West Cork. Having said that, it does however offer some really nice views....from Musheramore, Mullaghanish and the Paps to the North........Crohane and Mangerton to the North West....and the more local peaks of Douce, Doughill and Shehy More to the South. Access....If you are thinking of doing this one, it might be an idea to include it in the very nice loop walk around Gougane Barra. Park in Gougane Barra itself and walk back up the public road to the point W105 672(Point A). A small track heads off Northwards towards Coomataggart. As you walk up this track, you will notice a wire fence to your right. Sometimes, it will be hidden from view but as the track begins to fade, you will be about 50 metres from this fence. Follow the fence for another 1km and as you get near the top, veer off right for the summit. From Coomataggart, you can continue on to do the Gougane Barra loop and come back down near Derreennacusha. Allow about 5-6 hours for the walk.

There is just one short respite but as soon as one leaves the road, it's tough from the word go....well, ...

So I said feckit, and drove up.
