Stony slopes to the southern face can be particularly treacherous once fern growth is well advanced. If one's only experience of this area is in Spring be cautious on later visits.

I headed for Knockroe from Mount Leinster and the route presents no difficulties in good visibility. I had the benefit of a marvellous winter evening and approaching sunset as per the photo. Knockroe is the mountain left of centre in the photo. (Comment Rating 2.67)

We parked at the forest entrance on the R702 at 835 478(Point A), and approached Knockroe from the Aughnabrisky River. The forest tracks aren't exactly as shown on Sheet 68, but if you keep going NW through the forest from the end of the marked track, you'll eventually hit the river. Following the river avoids the fenced pasture and the steeper sections of the ascent to Knockroe. The picture shows the view from the summit looking NE, with the cairn and some ruined walls (which provide shelter from the wind), with Black Rock Mtn in the middle distance.

The Aughnabirsky River provides pleasant companionship on the walk up to Knockroe. This picture was taken at 834 486(Point B), looking downstream.
