A wolf by another name
Very interesting piece, Mark, and a good bit of sleuthing. Might be worth checking if you can find an entry for this name in the Ordnance Survey Name Book for Co. Laois (Queen's Co. at that time). Sometimes there's v. little on minor names (i.e. not townlands), but you never know. By the way, you mentioned mac ti/re as the Irish name for the wolf. This comes up in a couple of Kerry names: Eisc na Mac Ti/re ('ravine of the wolves') near Waterville, probably the big ravine immediately above Lough Iskanamacteery, and Céim an Mhic Ti/re / The Wolf's Step, name of the pass between Anascaul and An Baile Dubh, not marked on the Discovery, but shown on the 6" map as Wolfstep. Two other words (apparently older) for the wolf that occur in place-names are faol, e.g. Faoldroim / Feltrim, 'wolf-ridge', Co. Dublin, and bréach, e.g. Bréachmhaigh 'wolf-plain', a name that occurs in several places round Ireland, anglicised in different ways. You'll find them all at logainm.ie. I see one of them is anglicised as Breaghmore, Co. Offaly, also in Slieve Bloom. If the names can be taken at face value and aren't metaphorical, you could trace the presence of wolves in early Ireland by plotting the place-names. All the best, Paul

Wolftrap Mountain
Thanks for the kind comment about the Wolftrap Mountain comment Derry259. I originally wanted to write one of the new 'short summary' features for Wolftrap Mountain. However it turned into a full fledged piece on the possible origin of this curious mountain name, and a brief look at our historical experience of wolves in Ireland. Glad you enjoyed it!

Scavvy Walk 4 - Let's synchronise calendars
Mr Cra, pretty sure Saturday 15th August was last year! Anyways. you can add Kerry and Cambridgeshire to the attendee list as Mr Walker and myself have booked our accommodation from Thursday 12th and will be warming up on the Friday. And the weather will be nice too, the Donegal postman says so.

Acid reign?
Thanks for the 'diss' chord BC ignored my request as usual just burned my guitar and piano and fallen on my music stand for my musical sins. To all others the erosion is there the landowners dont like free spirits running over their land ignoring the pleas to use the path but anarachy is all with some enjoy while its still there

djouces dispair
Ah yes, Geolives, easily the most complicated , user unfriendly site ever concieved.
After going through all the steps you mentioned, which took ages due to poor instructions by both OSI and Geolives, I have succeeded in downloading some maptiles.Sometimes indeed there was a wait but never more than a few hours(usually much less) for the download link to appear in my inbox.
I would try downloading the tiles again and getting a new link sent(no cost as you already own the tiles).
I would also try to keep the size of file small as the larger it is the more unreliable the download seems to be(that said I resorted to downloading a single maptile in one instance and still have not managed to get that particular maptile to date!)
Overall not a good service, with instructions translated from French by an amateur.
