Leaving no trace
Commenting a few weeks ago on an abandoned tent and its jumbled contents – mostly heavy-duty plastic – that I had found at the head of Glensoulan in Wicklow, I could see this unsightly heap remaining where it was for years to come. Happily, future generations can rest easy. Alerted to the problem by Simon, the people from PURE (‘Protecting Uplands & Rural Environments’ partnership project), with the help of Wicklow Mountains National Park personnel, unleashed operation ‘Removal’ on the offending rubbish, and now nature, too, can breath easy again. Up to recently I had little idea that such selfless environmental Samaritans were at work in the Dublin and Wicklow uplands, so it is from deep within my walker’s heart that I am thankful for the generous service they give us all. Now living furth of Scotland and getting to know the Irish hills. If you come across a Scottish hill Walker with dodgy knees and walking sedately, stop and say hello.

Surprisingly Donegal islands have a very good mobile internet reception, sometimes better than in an office in Dublin.
