War Hill
Hi Padodes, I'm interested in your recent comments on the name of War Hill. It's not unusual for Irish mountains to have prosaic names, such as Sliabh Bán or Binn Dubh, but what is more remarkable about Cnoc an Bhairr, Price's suggested derivation for War Hill (not backed up by any Irish attestations in this case), is that it is rather tautological. Barr is itself a common term denoting a hill and is usually the first element in names, e.g. Barr Trí gCom (Baurtregaum), Barr an Ghéaráin (Brandon Peak), Barr na Coilleadh (Barnakillew), Barr an Dígín (Barradeegin). Also "hill of the top" seems a strange way to describe War Hill, since, as far as I remember, it's really only a minor outlier of Djouce. All of this makes me a little suspicious, and I'd be interested to get a reference to the battle you refer to. Many thanks, Paul
