Barranisky name query
Hi Wicklore, regarding your query about Barranisky, the meaning of this name suggests it was originally a hill-name (Ir. Barr an Uisce, (hill-)top of the water), but it has later been applied to two townlands. As far as I know, the names Barranisky East and Barranisky West are only townland names, not hill-names, but I stand open to correction on this, as I was rather short on information for this peak. Basically, I recommended the name Barranisky on the basis that a) it is originally a hill-name and b) the passage I quote from Fraser on the summit page supports the identification with this particular hill. However, I did check the OS 6" map, and as far as I remember, there is actually no name on the map for the hill itself as opposed to the townland. If anybody can come up with further information on the name of this peak, particularly from local history sources, we could consider reviewing the name used in MV.
