Looking at the brighter side
Our rotten weather this summer has had at least one very welcome effect. It has put a damper on the merry pyromaniacs in our midst who have been burning off, for fun or for finance, acres of verdant mountainside in recent years (at least in Dublin and Wicklow), with the tacit collusion of greenhouse temperatures. For once, this year, even if sodden to the bone, I havenít had to trudge up to my ankles in ashes or draw choking smoke into panting lungs. I can walk through purple heather again, instead of crunching through smouldering charcoal, or admire the buttercups rather than commiserate with their charred remains. Is it my imagination when I feel that the birds and honeybees, the deer and mild-mannered sheep arenít at all unhappy about their unseasonable drenching? Thereís definitely something to be said for the downside of an Irish summer.

Surprisingly Donegal islands have a very good mobile internet reception, sometimes better than in an office in Dublin.

Now living furth of Scotland and getting to know the Irish hills. If you come across a Scottish hill Walker with dodgy knees and walking sedately, stop and say hello.
