Lough Muskry
My Geography Teacher wife points out that there are neither feeder streams into the lake, nor outlet streams from the lake marked on the map. This implies that possibly the water table reaches this level resulting in the lake. More probable is that surface run-off creates and replenishes the lake without forming regular streams and channels. The water might percolate through the ground and reappear in a lower stream somewhere. Lough Muskry is in a ‘bowl’ and is surrounded by ground that is 7 metres higher all around. The water’s only escape must be underground.
Several lakes in this area don’t have visible inlets, outlets or both-Lough Dineen R 885 242, Borheen Lough R 898 245, and of course Lough Muskry and its smaller neighbour. Lough Dineen is another good example of a lake surrounded by higher ground.
