Magic forest moments. (Expand pics)
Red spotted carpet design.
On returning from Scalp Mountain on the Inishowen peninsula (Donegal) I tired of the extremely rough ground and had a go walking through the fairly well developed Sitka spruce of the forest. It was relatively easy to walk through and in places there was the spooky look you sometimes get where there's moss growing on the lower branches. But what a surprise underfoot. There was by far the greatest number I have ever seen of these red fungi. The photo shows one small part of this carpet. They stretched all around for hundreds of metres.

Does anyone know what the proper name for these things is? Are they edible or will you die if you eat them?

Might be worth adding that Ballymoyle Hill might be more appropriate name for this height. Called that in Coillte records. Whilst Barranisky is spelt thus on OS six inch maps, note that Hall Nevil...

Westaston Hill: The top?

I think the highest point is likely about 175 metres in a WSW direction from the mast. I'm judging this from aerial photography and DTM which shows a rocky outcrop in a small forest clearing. DTM ...
