Mourne Wall and Slieve Donard
I was a part of a group who were happily determined to climb Slieve Donard this past Saturday. We started from the Donard car park and were blessed with glorious sunshine as we made our way through the forest. I was so very happy to be back in the Mournes, until I began to notice the amount of trash we encountered along the way. It was depressing. There was so much of it, I had to give up; my back pack was laden down; there seemed no end to it. Since the Mourne Wall is so accessible to day trippers, and, since I have not experienced anything like this amount of rubbish in Wicklow, except in areas made similarly accessible, are we right to be extending the system of waymarked trails through our lovely hills? Is there a PURE programme in the "wee north" to deal with this rubbish? A depressing thought....perhaps delay the extension of the waymarked trails and spend the funds educating the children and then revisit in....10 years???

Though the road near L88003920 appears unfenced you will encounter a fence very soon after leaving the road. This fence extends along this back road, Bothar na Scrathóg and keeps cattle in typical...
