An Tiaracht - a most difficult place! (Expand pics)
Re Joe Brown in our midst/ An Tiaracht
It was MV member Pat McCarthy who has climbed to the summit of An Tiaracht, and has logged this on MV. He spent three summers on the island in the 70's, doing academic research on lichens. He has written a wonderful article as a summit comment on An Tiaracht here: http://mountainviews.ie/summit/1037/comment/4748/

Myself and photographer Peter Cox were thwarted in our effort to reach the summit by a missing section of hillside that had disappeared into the sea below. The rope used by Lighthouse Keepers to make the leap of fate across this gap had decayed and split apart decades ago. What might have been a simple 4 foot leap on safer ground appeared as a terrifying prospect with the angry sea boiling 300 feet below, with slippy rocks and loose lichen ofering little or no grip on the other side! We got as close as we felt was safe but had to concede defeat on that occasion. We couldn't claim that we climbed it. So An Tiaracht remains a mysterious outpost of Ireland, with many many years gone by since someone tread upon its summit!
