When is a summit actually bagged?
Do you have to physically touch the trig pillar or cairn on the exact summit in order to claim it climbed? Or can it be claimed if you succeed in being in the general area of the summit? What prompts the question is I have just had an excellent week-end doing the Joyce Country challenge. Perfect walking conditions, great walk, great hospitality, I’d highly recommend it to everyone for next year. However the trig pillar on the top of the large flat summit of Maumtrasna is not on the actual challenge route (too difficult to find in cloudy conditions apparently). So we were on the summit plateau, probable no more than 2 or 3m below the full height but I did not get to poke the trig pillar with the walking stick so have I climbed Maumtrasna?

Well not quite and I'm sure that Yeats himself would think that quote itself is a bit misplaced. However, there has been one very significant change to this area since all previous comments and it...
