SCAVENGER WALK 9 – FOR THE DIARY
Saturday August 18th Mourne Mountains Co Down

The ninth of these popular bi-annual walks.
Based in Newcastle Co Down, we meet on the Saturday morning for a day’s hike in the beautiful Mourne Mountains.

No charge for the walk. Arrange your own accommodation in Newcastle and any matters of insurance etc.

An opportunity to experience the magic of the Mourne Mountains and the cameraderie of “The Scavvy”.

SCAVENGER WALK 9 – SATURDAY AUGUST 18TH

Start 9.30am

Route:

Start/Finish Carricklittle

Walk out by Annalong main track to head of track beneath Commedagh.
Cut back along high contour track to mouth of Devil’s Coachroad.
Walkers can then choose a) Devil’s Coachroad or b) Miss out Devil’s Coachroad and advance to Slieve Beg / Cove Mtn col.
The group will split accordingly, each with a leader and remeet at the col.

The options thereafter include ascents to Cove Mtn, Lamagan and Binnian.
Any walker/s who want to come off can do so at any of the cols between – and back on to the Annalong track.

We then descend to the Annalong track and return to Carricklittle.

Carricklittle (SE beneath Binnian) can be accessed:

From Hilltown via Newry.
Hilltown/Kilkeel Road past Spelga Reservoir. Take a right at the Head Road, bearing ENE past the Silent Valley entrance until you meet the top of the Oldtown Road.

From Newcastle
Newcastle/Kilkeel Road.
Petrol Station and Quarter Road to right and Silent Valley Sign, past stone gates until you meet head of Oldtown Road.

Small granite walled carpark. Park inside or on road.

Please copy this into Word doc and save it (and print it) – it will save you tracking it down again.

We expect duration to be around 7 hours at around a steady B pace.

The walk is led by mountainviews members Douglas Reid (m.views aka Bleck Cra) and John Fitzgerald (m.views aka Jackill).

We meet at the finish of the walk, at O’Hares’s Bar, accessed from Donard carpark at circa 5pm and thereafter to our various accommodations, to return to McCanns Restaurant at O’Hare’s Bar for the Scavvy Meal at 7.30pm.

Thereafter to O’Hare’s Bar for craic agus ceol.

We look forward to meeting up with all our Scavvy friends but particularly new Scavvies, so do please come along.

Any questions, simply get me on douglasreid@utvinternet.com and hope to see you at Scavvy 9.

At today's date, we now have 21 mountainviews members and friends - and counting - coming to Scavvy 9.
