During a recent Mountain Leader Assessment in Kerry, Bren Whelan, Mountain Training, identified a serious error with the 'OSI Killarney National Park' 1:25,000 scale map.
The normal grid should consist of 40mm grid squares, but the printed version that was bought (dated 2009) was scaled at 38mm. This means that the map has an error of 50 meters or 2 mills in the scaling, which is very serious given the nature of the terrain around Mangerton Mountain.
Bren highlights the danger of the error, "Walkers returning to the Devil's Punch Bowl track from the summit of Mangerton, need to navigate to a small path, the top of which is located on serious ground between the Devil's Punch Bowl and Lough Erhogh, the top of the track is marked with a small cairn, but the start of the track is steep and committing. Anyone who has measured the distance and is pacing could be in serious danger if using this map which has a 38mm grid".
Brian McArdle, Ordnance Survey Ireland said, “Our data was licenced to produce a map of the Killarney National Park Map. In error when producing the map the publisher in question changed the scale of the map without the permission of the Ordnance Survey. We have received a number of complaints regarding the incorrect scale of the map. We immediately instructed the publisher to withdraw the map from their catalogue. We also insisted that any maps held in stock were to be destroyed and that they re-call this map from general circulation”.
