GPS
I've used various Garmin models over the years. For the last 4 I've used a GPS60csx model which I have found reliable and rugged. It has the facility also to take MV member Pazapas' excellent coloured contour map for Ireland(which has all of the MV summits on it). You can follow the link More/resources/gpsmap for ireland to download this. It is free and frequently updated and so addresses the problem of maps becoming obsolete somewhat.
This gps map has my main tool in the last few yearsand although I do still take a map and compass I find that the contour map and summits are easy to use and convienient.
I download all my saved tracks to my pc and find they can make interesting reading on a program such as OSI trailmaster or the updated Geolives.
Also MV are going to roll out a GPS track sharing facility this year and if you have a GPS you will be able to download and use tracks others have uploaded and also to share your tracks with others. It will also give you the facility to view and interpret your tracks and overlay the track on various maps.
Again this will be free to use thanks to Simons trojan efforts.
I reckon it depend.. by aidand   (Show all posts)

Now living furth of Scotland and getting to know the Irish hills. If you come across a Scottish hill Walker with dodgy knees and walking sedately, stop and say hello.

Surprisingly Donegal islands have a very good mobile internet reception, sometimes better than in an office in Dublin.
