Glendalough Upper Lake (Expand pics)
Glendalough today
We went up to Glendalough this afternoon from Wicklow Town via Roundwood with the aim of doing some snow shoeing. The road as far as the hotel in Glendalough was reasonably OK and in fact was being snow ploughed again on our return. The road after the hotel as far as the car park entrance at the upper lake had about 20-30cm of snow and was only passable in my car by using snow chains. The snow was scrapping the underside of the car with the front spoiler acting as a snow plough - any deeper would have been a problem. We parked at the side of the road just before the barrier to the miner's road.

There was about 30cm+ of snow on the walk along the Miner's road and this was not a problem as we were wearing snow shoes. We had to break trial most of the way and it was almost like snow shoeing in North America. We went as far as the waterfall past the Miner's village.

Glendalough is a nice walk at any time but even more so today when we had the valley to ourselves, our only companions being the herds of deer who had come down from the hilltops. But check the roads before trying to get to any hills in the present weather and heed the advice of the Mountain Rescue (especially in the light of tonights rescue at Lough Bray).

PS. My hands where nice and toasty in one of my six pairs of gloves!

Cupidstown Hill: Enhance this with a visit to Oughterard
Bunsen7 2 days ago.
Yes, perhaps this is not a very noteworthy hill. Cupidstown and Saggart Hill represent largely forest topped outliers of the Dublin/Wicklow range split from higher summits to the East by the N81. ...

Robber's Pass Hill: Minor heathery lump. Overcivilised and underwhelming.

This oddly named hill is more a very minor heathery bump incorporated into the system of tracks laid out by the Wicklow Mountains National Park. It can be reached from any of the western car-parks...
