Ice on the Glen River Path (Expand pics)
Winter weather on the hills
Just to follow on from Simon's post we went up Slieve Commedagh in the Mournes today via the Glen River Path from Newcastle and observed many ill equiped persons on the hills. In partricular the upper part of the path towards the Castles was very icy and could only really be safely tackled wearing crampons (which we did but no one else seemed to have these or suitable winter boots). Whilst on the top of Slieve Commedagh we had a snow blizzard giving almost white out conditions. In such conditions careful navigation is essential. The path on the way back down was even worse as fresh snow covered the ice. In the mountains in winter you need to expect the unexpected and carry spare clothes, food, lights and equipment for the conditions.
