whats in a name
As much as I agree with all the views on lost names and the corruption of old names as gaelige, another stick to bate theaccursed albion with? I do believe standardisation of map place names is important for navigation and writing up routes for others to follow. The pursuit of old names and the need to keep records of them could be a parallel activity with historic (al? pedants will correct) maps for the interested for example the fabulous mapsproduced by tim robinson for arann, connemara, achill and the burren traded as folding landscapes which include history and features not shown on ord surv. In an evolving society names including place names come and go with relevance would you not agree? I like one near my home which is moneyscalp hill, written down as sounded by an ord surveyor from muine na sceilpe (pardon the spelling gaelgaors) which I read means hill of the junipers! which are long gone anyway.

A fine hill with a well defined summit and great views. Plenty of parking spots along the R254 directly to the south of the summit. From there it's a relatively simple 1km climb to the top.
