Zest and Zeal galore on Scavenger 4: Part One
Here is my humble contribution to the post Scavenger 4 walk chatter. At first I didn’t know where to begin. There were so many elements to the walk, the people, the conversation and the atmosphere that I knew I couldn’t capture it all. But I will try!

Is it a uniquely Irish thing that you can thrust 17 relative strangers together and by the end of the walking day they are the best of pals, sharing stories and food, comforting and supporting those who needed it, and unmercifully slagging those who also needed it? Well it can’t be a uniquely Irish thing when you consider the group was made up of Cornish, Welsh, Scottish, English, as well as Ulster, Munster and Leinsterfolk. (was Connaught there?) Then it must be a Mountain thing. Diverse as our group was, we were all gathered under the common umbrella of going for a walk in the mountains. With this starting point we proceeded to make the absolute most of it. A fabulous day ensued, both weatherwise and in the quality of the fun and camaraderie that was to be had.

It is hard for non-attendees to appreciate the meandering course the conversations take over a day like this. As walkers mingled and chatted through the day, each new conversation and each new talking partner brought fresh and unusual topics of discussion.

A passer-by would have caught such snatches of conversation through the day:

’I spent a week underground’....

’He is simply wrong about that, it is not Hill of the Ants’....

’You can’t bag a mountain by just looking up at it’...

’We christen it the Meandering Bag’...

’They were naked on the summit’...

’I didn’t say you’re fat, I said you’d make a soft landing if I fell on you’...

‘You’re from the Principality of Wales and you’re from the Dukedom of Cornwall’...

‘The big mountain is smaller, and the small mountain is bigger’...

‘It’s not a UFO, but I don’t know what it is’...

‘That’s the evil fairy’s hole over there’...

‘I’m related to Niall of the Nine hostages’...

‘The wild ravens come when I call’...

It’s all about context. These excerpts will mean nothing to those who didn’t hear the conversation. No doubt I missed loads of other fascinating chats too. But surely these excerpts show that the art of conversation is truly alive and well, and to be found when you come on a Scavenger Walk?!!
