Re: gps unit
Woody, the Garmin eTrex is the entry level model GPS. It has various datum settings for use internationally and so on but also has an irish grid setting which is compatiable with the OS Discovery series maps. It also contains a barometer to give an indication of current height. Other features include the ability to enter waypoints whcih is handy as you can save the location of mountain summits, carparks and so on. As I said it is a very basic model and wont be compatiable with digital maps, having said that I only wanted something to match your requirements and this fits the role perfectly. Takes two standard AA batteries too.

Should not put you out of pocket too much either compared with the latest mapping GPS models and should retail in or around €100. Jackson Sports (great site for all kinds of equipment and usually a fraction cheaper than elsewhere) currently have this model online for €108 including delivery and pixmania have it on offer for €75 excluding delivery.

Hope this is of some help, anything else can drop me a line
