On the right track
Weedavie, you are throwing stones at a caricature, I think. The picture of a chap taking to the hills with his nose glued to a GPS and nothing else is an easy target for your scorn. I am old enough to have spent most of my life using a map and compass and, like you, I enjoy the sense of achievement that comes from good navigation by simple means. That still doesn't take away, however, from the added pleasure and security that comes from the intelligent use of a GPS. In normal circumstances it can just be used occasionally to confirm that you are where you think you are. In dense fog and white-out conditions it's a time-saver, and it can also be a life-saver. It never absolves you from planning your moves, taking careful stock of the terrain around you and making sometimes serious navigational decisions. For that reason "GPS navigation" is not an oxymoron, as you suggest. It's navigation by other means.
