SMC contour maps
Thanks to MountainViews, I learned of the SMC V2 contour maps for Garmin GPS receivers and have since happily installed them on my own without too much difficulty. They truly give an excellent topo quality to GPS navigation. I was wondering what the experience of other users might be as to their accuracy. As far as I can see, the contours themselves are precise, but the positioning of summits and trig points seems to be somewhat less so. On mountains with trig pillars, the two are sometimes separated on the map by tens of metres, even though the highest point on the mountain is, arguably, where the trig pillar has been placed. In Wicklow, for example, the SMC map shows a separation of the two points on Tonelagee and on Mullacleevaun. From the point of view of navigation, this is not a big issue, but it would be interesting to learn of others' experience regarding the accuracy of the maps.
