Bang goes the Summer
Rapid backfire. The screech of tyres. A hail of grit and gravel. A day in the life of the Dukes of Hazzard? Nope: it was Saturday, the Down Motor Rally and party-time at Donard Carpark. “No room! No room!' they cried out when they saw Alice coming. “There's plenty of room!” said Alice indignantly - resting the vehicle neatly on his foot. “Holy eff Missus …Yees cyant come in here,” Did it really say “M. Hatty - Official” on his badge? So that was that: the gentle weekend tableau of gaiters, Bridgedales, grey pacs, and scrubbed faces, transformed into grids of four-wheeled flying machines, black boiler-suited blokes, head, hands and torsos within. And so trails of track rats fizzled angrily ‘round the edge of this cauldron and poured testily on to the hill. All day, Donard roared and spat echoes of wide-bore exhausts and asthmatic carburettors. By way of rapid response, the Brits at Ballykinlar army base came out for a day on the firing range. Winter had officially opened; the breathtaking beauty of long, crag-creeping shadows, frost-burnt grass and the bitter taste of snowmelt burn water; all suitably celebrated with a bang or two.
