NI place-name database back online
Those of you that walk in the North may be interested to know that OSNI has brought the Northern Ireland place-name database back online at: http://www.placenamesni.org It was previously available as "Pointer", but was taken down about 18 months ago while work was done to integrate various geographical services. The database can be searched for placenames in the six counties using a text search or through maps. The highest level up-to-date map viewable is the 1:10,000 series. As well as current OSNI maps, historical maps at 6" to the mile from 1830 and 1850 can be viewed. At present the text search only finds townland names, but other place-names will be made available later. The place-name data is a subset of the database of the NI Place-Name Project, based at Queen's University, Belfast. It is in draft format for the present.
