Crampons - more
Being looking at some of the comments about walking in soft snow and the use of crampons. I've never used crampons and always associated them more with ice rather than snow conditions - what I have used during regular Xmas holidays with the relations in Canada are snowshoes and these making walking in soft snow immeasurably easier - you sink in only about two or three inches. And for those who still associate snowshoes with over-sized tennis rackets, modern show shoes are light plastic, easy to put on and off and very easy to use once you get the knack of walking a little bit bow-legged. I remember doing Lug a few years ago from the Glen and from the top of Camara Hill the snow got deeper and deeper until it was knee deep on Lug. and thinking to myself this would have been a lot weasier if only I'd brought a pair of snowshoes from Canada last time. I've never seen snowshoes on sale in Ireland though I'm sure they can be got off the internet
