it is possible to walk the trail in a full day, but i doubt youd manage it and climb slieve carr at the same time, if you want to try what i would suggest is to miss out the section between newport and the borgan carroll bothy at keenagh, and start or finish at the bothy and this will take a couple of hours off your walk, the bothy is at 496905 805598, co ords taken from osi webmaps i hope their right, this is pretty much the only spot where you can shorten or finish the walk early , i normally just walk this section and it has taken the better part of 8 hours at a fairly leisurely pace and with some stops for grub etc... i would say if you want to climb slieve carr in comfort then bring the tent...
