Checking or calculating altitude and ascent
I note that the descriptions of walks here and in books usually include a reference to the ascent.

May seem like a silly question but how is this calculated? Is there any electronic gadget for working it out, or is it simply a case of noting the contours on maps and adding up? Just that I see some places where the detail is greater than simply going by contours would seem to allow, down to the metre.
