Quandary over Quads-follow up
Following on from my recent post about seeing quad bikers at work breaking through a fence in Wicklow and then reattaching the wire, I rang the duty ranger from the National Parks service. She explained that their area of responsibility was open hillside within the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Because this issue occurred in a forest it became a matter for Coillte. I dutifully rang Coillte, and the man I spoke to confirmed that quad bikes, scramblers etc are banned from Coillte forests whether they are on tracks or otherwise. He explained that this area is indeed plagued with this type of activity. As padodes and others can testify to, the bogs of Corrig, Seefingan etc in this area have been churned up leading to rapid erosion. When I told the Coillte chap that I had taken a surreptitious photo of the quad bikers he said that these people are dangerous and can be threatening if they find themselves being challenged (or photographed) His advice was to not challenge them but simply try to get registration numbers. However the quads did not have reg plates, and the vehicles for transporting them were elsewhere. So where does this leave things? My photo was too vague for identifying anyone, so it is useless. Coillte can only respond if they are in the area. Ditto for the National Park Rangers. It is too risky to challenge the bikers. Is this a no-win situation, with the forests and hillsides being the losers?

Topped Mountain: Short & simple

A simple little Minion to climb (the name Topped 'Mountain' is a bit of a stretch). A gravel path & steps from a carpark will see you reach the top in about 15 minutes, and you won't even need you...

Crockmulroney: Good summit for Carn-baggers

A fine hill with a well defined summit and great views. Plenty of parking spots along the R254 directly to the south of the summit. From there it's a relatively simple 1km climb to the top.
