Travel to Carantouhill
Thanks Jackill. Checked them out. Not too convenient. Seems quickest bus journey is 5.5 hours and train route fairly convoluted - suggests via Dublin as the quickest! I see from AA route planner the drive is only 120 miles - anyone with experience hitching from Kilkenny to Killarney or any part of the route? It would be a shame to spend so much time on a bus/train when I really want to spend more time on the mountains themselves. Anyone know of any internet notice boards for getting lifts? Thanks.(I can't drive so hiring a car is not feasible).

Seat with a view!
On a recent walk around Croaghanmoira Mountain, our walking club came across this leather armchair with a view. As you can see, it was put to good use by some of our members!

Travel to Carrauntoohil
try www.irishrail.ie and www.buseireann.ie for timetables , the nearest station to the mountain would be Killarney.

Travel to Canratouhill
Hi. I am travelling to Kilkenny (my family home) at the end of July (I live in Glasgow). I'd like to climb Carantouhill while over. Does anyone have info on train or bus services from Kilkenny, or youth hostels in the area? Even if someone could just let me know the nearest train stattion to the mountain. Thanks for any help.

I have been away from the hills for some months. I ask friends and supporters to remain patient. Meanwhile here is a link to a YouTube video showing Basketball on Carrauntoohil

Mourne Youth Ranger Programme
Tomorrow I'll be attending the first meeting of the Youth Rangers! Can't wait! The scheme allows young people to get involved in practical conservation work in the Mourne Area, and to learn about Conservation, Countryside Management and Biodiversity issues. Finally I have the opportunity to get involved in something I love, and something I'd consider doing as a job. Just thought I'd express my excitement on MV!

Mapping for GPS
To Beckett : you can ask me through my website for more information about mapping. After having seen Gollum in this forum, I don't want to be the troll of Mountain Views ; )

Re: GPS Ireland map
Pazapas, I would be interested in understanding in a little more detail how you create your map. Are you using Dem2Topo or some similar software? What is your source data?

GPS Ireland map updated
Hello walkers,

The Garmin GPS topo Ireland map is updated (v1.62). It includes the new list of summits higher than 400m and new "smoother" contours (higher point in original data is only 1012m, not 1039, oversampling method erodes summits: 1000m line disappeared).

The new map is available at http://emeraldisland.free.fr/wikka/wikka.php?wakka=GpsMap

I have to explain few things about this map and its purpose. The map is made with elevation data with an average precision (around 90m in northing and 60m in easting for Ireland). I oversampled the grid in order to produce smoother lines. Because of the inaccuracy of source data and the need to obtain a single small file, I generate contour lines with a step of 25m only. Moreover, I think small grey LCD on ruggerised GPS are not well suited to display too much data. Finally, I support the idea that GPS should be used as a secondary mean for orientation. The map I produced is enough detailed to find your position in another manner than just the coordinates referred on a paper map.

Thanks to all who sent me their feedback.
